Is it difficult for an irish resident to purchase a car in the uk and transfer it over to ireland? thanks!?
Answers:
This is only normally done for rare second hand models, ie convertibles, high powered sports cars, and classic cars from pre-1976.
These cars are in demand in Ireland, but not many were sold new in the Irish market, so it can be a viable proposition to go to the UK for these cars, if you research your figures carefully.
You must pay VRT on any car imported into the Republic of Ireland. This is roughly 30-50% of the local market value of the car. If you do not pay this tax the police/Gardai may seize your car and crush it after 90 days if you do not pay the tax. I was in one of their yards on Monday 19/06/2006, and they had over 1000 cars and bikes, in Santry Garda Station in Dublin. Some were fabulous!
For a brand new car, the additional costs of shipping, plus the loss of your local UK warranty, plus the VRT and VAT, always far outweigh the costs of buying the same car new in the Republic of Ireland
no you can have them deliverd to you home address, or you can drive accross or use a ferry!
