I am looking to buy a nearly new diesel automatic car. £17,000 budget any suggestions most welcome?

I have looked at Volkswagen golf 2 L GT TDi. Also a Mondeo turbo diesel automatic (makes good sense apart from size and fuel consumption) Skoda Octavia elegance 2 L automatic turbodiesel but the name I still find offputting. I would welcome any suggestion but my two main criteria are diesel and automatic.
Look forward to any ideas -- Best wishes -- tonetheteach.

Have a Skoda Octavia, beautiful car for the money, the new models improve on the previous ones with a more refined drive. Very solid, based on VW engineering, but lack a bit of the VW flair. Still, great cars for the money. Get a Skoda, and spend your saved cash on a holday!!
And there's nothing wrong with the name these days, some people think it's funny, until you take them for a drive and they find out how much you paid for the car. Have fun.
Try BMW or Lexus. They keep their second-hand value, and you are getting a really top-class motor and half the price of new.
I know what you mean about the Skoda.
mondeo no

try a Citroen they are nice g/f got a saxo but they do bigger models
I have a Golf tdi gl 5 speed, and I love the 52 miles per gallon it gets, just a thought.
Perhaps somewhat out there but can i suggest a 2001/2 mercedes s320 cdi?
The peugeot 307 and Citroen c3 HDi Hybrids are coming out soon at around that price - if you are looking for cheaper running costs.

As a drive, the Peugeot 307 2l HDi has served me well, however, the trim internal and external is shockingly cheap and prone to bits falling off or breaking when putting back seats down.

I am currently looking at the corolla and the mini one diesel for my replacement
My experience so far with diesel is the Volkswagen Passat 1.9 tdi(red i) 110hbp, its very comfortable stylish and easy to run, but skoda is Volkswagen too, its not that stylish though, dont know what its like to drive but comes in at a reasonable price. I've driven Toyota-very sore in juice, Renault-inferior make couple of peugouts small and big-very light bodies. I am a woman driver, would never go back to a small car/I like my comfort, but if you feel insecure driving a big car maybe you would be better with the Golf. Hope this is of help to you or maybe confuses you more!!
