Why are petrol stations allowed to advertise fuel at a price that doesn't exist? eg 90.4 pence per litre?

I realise that if you wanted to buy one litre. they will round up to nearest penny, but in that case, why not advertise at that amount? How is this not false advertising?

Answers:
Stupid just to buy one litre so why don't they go back to what they had before (to the gallon)
I'm still trying to figure out that 9/10 of a cent crap
they wouldn't let you buy just 1 litre. Its the same as some being 99p why not a pound. It sounds better if it looks that little bit cheaper.
If you look on the pumps there is normally a minimum amout that you must spend. So the price gets rounded up.

But you are right in that some times it is stupid
I generally buy around 50 litres at a time so if they were to sell it at 91p a litre as you are suggesting i will be out of pocket by 30p every time I fill up. Not a lot but it all adds up
it probably spanned from when it was worked out per gallon, who knows but you do have a valid point.
its a rip of when they round up, after all the 1/2 pence went a long time ago..
