What colour should engine oil be?

Most engine oil as it comes out of the can is a clear golden colour. Anything closest to that is best. If your engine oil is opaque or dark, it is past time to change it, because this is an indication of contaminants in the oil. The contaminants can gouge the walls of your cylinders.

If it is that color than it means it's working cleaning the engine.
It should be the color that it is when it's in the new container then after 3000 miles take it all out and replace it. If your oil is black then change it 3 times after 1000 miles then every 3000. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
This depends on whether it is a petrol engine or diesel. In a petrol the oil should be really clear with a slight tint of colour (duckhams is green, castrol golden) if its black or dirty then change the oil and filter.
If it is a diesel then dont worry about the oil being dark or black as it always is with diesel being quite dirty, on this check as to whether it seems quite thick if so change it.
If at any time it is brown and creamy you may have big problems with a head gasket gone ( stop driving the car straight away) or if there is only a small amount of this take the car on a long run this should clear as it is normally condensation in the oil from lots of short journeys.
Engine oil can range from light yellow/brown to honey and darker color depending on the region from which it came. When drained for an oil change it will be much darker and should still apprear to be somewhat clear. If is is dark, black and grungy it has been left too long or your car is producing too much carbon.

engine oil should be dark dark gold for up to 10 year old cars or black if its milky colour u got problems i.e head gasket blowen

Duckhams Q used to be green, but not many cars around these days that would need to use an old 20W/50 like that.
Most oils are pale golden brown or a light straw colour going-in, and a dark brown or black coming-out.
IT SHOULD BE A CLEAR TAN - BROWN COLOR NOT BLACK!! IF IT IS BLACK CHANGE IT!

A light tan color almost clear with no white in it. If it's dark then change your oil and filter.
