Rover 25 on startup get a rattle clank noise- white steam from exhaust could it be the catalytic converter?
Answers:
Sounds like it. You can do two things. Remove the converter or replace the muffler///which ever you choose or what ever is cheapest.
White steam..good. Blue ..BAD!!
I think that the white steam is probably nothing more than water collecting in the exhaust, take it for a good run, like 10 miles plus, and it should boil off. The rattle and a clank needs further investigation, if its from the exhaust maybe just a loose mounting, get it up on a ramp and its probably a 2 minute job
White steam from exhaust usually means the head gasket has gone. If it is using a lot of water that is an indication.
Head gasket is f*cked.
Also try pulling out the dipstick and see if the oil has turned into what looks like melted milky bars.
Hi
I had the same problem last year. It turned out to be the head gasket, which is prone to go after about 5,000 miles.
Check you expansion tank from the radiator
If you start getting a milky colour in the water take it to a garage as soon as possible.
I never and ended up spending £800 getting it repaired.
lift the oil filler cap of if it has white gunge on the under side its a head gasket failure if it isnt then check oil level maybe its low is the car parked on a hill overnight if it is the oil will run to the back of engine causing rattle on start up white smoke can be normal but it can be seriuos as well these little cars have weak hyead gaskets its a common fault with all rovers good luck
