Any mechanics here? Corsa 1.2 acceleration problem.?

1996 corsa 1.2 has trouble accelerating in 1st and second gear, mainly in hot weather, less noticable in the cold.

I change to 1st or 2nd gear and when I put my foot down the revs stick at about 3k for about 5 - 10 seconds then suddenly the power comes back.

Great fun at busy junctions believe me.

Any ideas?? New air filter fitted made no difference. Also I've used a couple of bottles of that injector cleaner stuff still made no difference.

Wait a minute -- it's holding revs high even after you change gear? So you're getting an almost crawling takeoff, right? No real judder, just accelerates like a tired snail while the engine races?

That sounds like a slipping clutch. If there's oil getting on the plates through a bad rear engine seal it would cause that effect. Worse when the day's hot and the engine's very warm. Oil runs thinner when it's hot and so it leaks past the end seal more easily. Oil on the clutch defeats the purpose of the whole thing, which is for the driven plate to grab onto the pressure plate (under very high pressure) and transfer the power from the motor to the gearbox. The reason the car starts picking up again after five or ten seconds is the spinning clutch gets hot from friction and burns off most of the oil so it can grab again. Then it runs along fine.

Of course, it'll also do it first off when the car's been sitting because the oil's had time to ooze over the plates. But because the torque transfer is not so radical in a higher gear (which is why you can spin the wheels in 1st but not in 3rd), the clutch will grip and you won't get over-revving. Except if you are going up a steep hill and the motor revs start to rise, even in thrid or fourth.

How to check it? Get any decent mechanic to drive your car round the block. If it's the clutch slipping it's very obvious to somone who know what to listen for. The car's at the right age for a problem like this stemming from oil seal failure.

To fix it, the gearbox has to come off. Then the clutch is removed, then the flywheel, and then the stupid five-dollar seal can be changed. Then they put everything back on with a new clutch driven plate and a clean pressure plate.

Takes about three to five hours for the whole job.

Let us know when you choose whoever was best anwer, okay?

yes that one is easy- of course you are going to have acceleration problems. it is a 1.2 Corsa. Scrap the car and buy something that isnt a big pile of crap. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Does it have an automatic choke? Maybe the thermostat on the choke needs replacing. I had a similier probem with a Vauxhall Cavalier some years ago.
Have to agree with Jason! Best solution all-round!
it couldl be a number of things. first when is the last time you checked the fuel filter ? a clogged fuel filter could cause a "sputter " or a loss in performance . secound, check your spark plug wires if you see any kind of pieces missing or places that is worn more than others you might have an "arch" between your wires wich would cause the same thing. third , check your air filter and intake manifold, dirty air filters and/or intake manifold will result in the same way . try some bf goodrich intake cleaner "use as directed"
Have you had the engine managment light on thats the one like a cyl block with a lightning falsh through the centre ? It sounds as if your mass air flow meter is faulty.Take it to a garage that has a code reader if its faulty it should show a trouble code .Regards Mick.
get a new clutch.
Does it judder and seem like it wants to stall? If so its not getting enough fuel, which means tune-up, spark plug renewal or maybe re-programming the computer. As a short-term remedy when your driving rev it up to over 3000 revs before letting the clutch out. You'll have to slip it a little more to prevent wheel-spin but it should pull away more positively this way.

If it doesn't judder the injectors will probably be worn, they'll cost more than the cars worth to replace.
