Are Sat Navs a waste of time and money? Why can't they tell the difference between a main rd and a narrow rd.

If we are so clever with technology, surely it should be possible to warn of roads that are unsuitable for traffic, especially heavy lorries?

Answers:
No they are not a waste of money if the idiots who programme them did a little research first and discovered which roads were unsuitable for vehicles and programmed them accordingly. Remember most roads in Britain (and probably everywhere else) were first made by Romans marching up and down whilst trying to civilise us all, then horse and carts and the onset of the motor vehicle led to them being made wider and bricked over, then tarmac companies got in on the act. The country roads (as envisaged by John Denver) were left to the farmers and tractors and the programmers are probably relying on ancient maps and not going to check it out. Hence, lorries getting stuck in narrowing tracks, dead ends with no earthly hope of turning round and roads ending with a damn big duck pond at the end.
Get yourself an AA Map. They usually get it right.
Are you using it correctly?
Is there no way you can select A roads only on yours? Surely that would sort out your problem..
Ah, sat navs are just a tool. Even if they are quite an elaborate tool, they are still a tool. They are limited by the user. If the user doesn't know how to use it as a tool, and instead relies solely on it, then of course you will have problems. Use a variety of tools - like good old fashioned maps, when planning your journey.
As with everything you need to use some common sense with new tech stuff, best to use 'quickest route' as an option.
The next generation will probably be that much smarter, it's not bad for first generation I suppose.
You can't beat a map! They don't lie to you, or shout at you! Plus if you do get lost, you can ask fit women for directions! If your bird notices a pattern, just say that they are the "least threatening" people to ask!
Yes, buy a map!
