The car is losing coolant somewhere but I can't find a leak. I changed the thermostat but the overheating persists. How can I tell if it is a water pump or some other problem like the head gasket? Apparently these cars have a history of lousy water pumps.

Hairline crack in the head
its almost definantly your head gasket, there notorious for them going, and its a very expensive problem to fix, you should avoid driving it and take it to a garage to have a look at straight away.
TIP- take your oil cap off, and look inside the cap if you can see a white foamy gunge then the water is mixing with the oil, and that means its the head gasket.
if its the water pump you will see water dripping down
to diagonise a blown head gasket there is usually a thick creamy white substance in your coolant or your oil and the engine may miss fire slightly
