Hi, I'm a little confused about this. What year did the new 01,02 etc car reg come about?

If an X reg is 2001, then a registration 01 came out what year? They started doing that after Y. but then it wasn't 01 was it? You get what I'm saying? I'm confusing myself!

The DVLA sped up the use of single letters at the beginning of a plate, so the X reg ran between September 2000 to February 2001; the Y reg ran between March 2001 and August 2001. From September 2001, the 51 plates appeared, and so on (02 from March 2002 to September 2002, 52 from September 2002 to March 2003, etc.)
01 came out in march 2001, 51 came out in September 2001 02 came out in March 2002, 52 came out in September 2002. Etc.
September 2001 showed the 51 plate which followed the Y plate.
01 was never released it started with 51 in september 2001 after the Y plate finished
