When you mention "3-door" do you mean 2 doors plus a hatchback?

If so the Toyota Yaris (new for 2007) should be a good choice.
It comes in 3-door hatchback and 4-door sedan.
It is Toyota's smallest car sold in the US.
It should get good fuel economy and be very reliable like other Toyotas.

Also, the Ford Focus is Fords smallest car in the US and it comes in a 3-door hatchback. I don't know if it is reliable as the Toyota.
