Had a head gasket replaced on a rover a couple of months ago. I paid £500 which i'm told was cheap. The price will increase if it needs skimmed. To make matters worse once the head gasket has been replaced its integrity can't be guaranteed so it might go again. If your car's a banger bin it and go and get another.
its never as simple as it seems, go to a good mechanic and get it done right, some will charge you for work that is not needed. so find someone with a good rep. most of the cost will go on time, unless its more than a head gasket. but a good mechanic will keep you informed of the cost and if it is worth fixing. i drive old cars so if any thing like that goes, i just get rid, the cost will also depend on where you live, so have a good look round and ask a lot of questions even if the question sounds stupid.
