The new Micra is supposed to be very well equipped for a small car. Unfortunatly it's also unreliable, looks seriously ugly and if you see another you can gaurentee its driven by a dead person wearing a Burberry suit. No self respecting human would be seen dead in one!! But if you just want well equipped thats your car!
i have herd that the toyota pris is fantastic also you can get cars that run on solar power and veggie oil but sometimes they are $$$$$$
My bf has a Ford Fiesta 1.6 Diesel. It has 6 CD player leather seats and climate control etc. You can choose no end of options. It does 60 mpg. Stylish? I've let him shag me on the back seat
For sure go with Toyoto Camry Hybrid. That car is killer on millage, and man the interior is ncie for it's class. Beautiful car for the milage it gives, amazing.

Any other car that burns less fuel is usually small.
I don't know what your budget refers to as economical but the Suzuki line of autos and SUV's is unbeatable! I just bought a new Grand Vitara Luxury for $22,000 and there are no other options available on an automobile than what Suzuki offers! This same vehicle equipped with the same options in any other brand is going to cost you $35,000 plus! I get fantastic gas milage, beautiful ride, lots of room and we are just pleased with it totally! Best warranty in the industry-7year 100,000 mile warranty that includes loaner car when in service, road side service package, food and lodging cost if you break down while traveling etc. Can't beat the value for the money!!
My brother has the 2003 XL-7 and absolutely not one single problem other than general maintainence!!!!!!.
Just some of the options I have: V-6 engine, 2 tone exterior/interior color, 4x4, 17" wheels, smart entry, ALL WHEEL 4 wheel drive, tilt steering, cruise, heated seats, leather interior, 6 position seats with reclining back seats, 6 cd changer, mp3, some other windows thing, am-fm suround speaker system, climate control w/AC, and so much more! Just a super deal in my opinion! I went online here and several other forums and posted for comments. I truthfully can tell you I did not get a single complaint! Everyone who answered said they would purchase another one in a heart beat!

i own a repair shop, and i think the best one would be a Toyota corolla ,they have all the goodies on them and still are very economical to operate, and as far as repairs goes ,they just don't give that much trouble at all,and you can get a fully dressed up one for half of what the other makes want for a car that's equal to it,i always rate a car buy how much i have to work on it,and the corollas hold up really well, and ride good,i think it would be a good choice, good luck i hope this help,s.
I don't know how you can go wrong with a Hyundai. Either an Accent or for something a little bigger, the newly redesigned Elantra. They beat Honda and Toyota (hard to believe, but true) in Initial value. Cost much less and built better. The warranty is tops as well.
Korean cars such as Hyundai, Kia, Suzuki (yes this is Japanese brand but most of their cars are rebadged Daewoos, another Korean brand). those meet your criteria. Plus they come with industry's best warranties.

I see them advertised all the time for under $10K. They're not stripped either, they're equpped with auto, a/c, pwl, pw, etc. Plus they look very stylish.
smart car
