Vw - lupo - tdi - keep getting a klonk from steering.?

happens when not moving- mostly on tarmac ( maybe extra friction) have jacked it up- doesnt klonk so cannot see where it is coming from.- no access to a pit. Any ideas? ( please dont bother with put it in the garage)

check the rack is tight. and the track rod ends. and what do you epect turning the wheel whilst stationary. i presume with the engine running.. the clunk is probably no more than the free play in the system locking up against the coefficiency of friction generated betweent eh tarmac and 2 tons of car..

check the anti-roll bar linkage is not broken!!
