Focus ST170 or Civic Type-R?
Heard good and bad things about both, I know quite a bit about them but thought I'd put this question out to the community!

Well for a start you wont be able to get a ST170 used for 9k - it's only just come out really. If that wasn't the case I'd go for the ST170, wonder if anyone replying here has actually driven both (or either?) the civic you dont have much power at all unless you thrash the engine to 5k rpm+ it soon gets boring whereas the focus has excellent power delivery, comes very well specced and pretty much beats the (current) type r in almost every area. You could always wait for the new type-r in 2007.

Civic without a doubt. Faster and more reliable. More mods as it is a jap car.You know what they say about fords:

Honda make better cars than ford so thats a real good reason imo.

My personal preference would be the new model Leon Cupra, but that aside, of your two options I'd sooner go for the Civic.
I think it has more aggressive lines, and the older shaped focus st170 is a little boy-racer/chav-tastic for my opinion.
my favourite would be the type-r - looks alot sexier without having to be modded but then thts my personal preference ;o)

Type R for sure, it'll be better built and wont cost as much to maintain, faster too.
civic type r
lucky you to have this choice. I'd go for the civic, just because of the reliability and resale values.
My son has clocked up 45k in his ST 170, without problem, it is a nice car and is certainly quick.
I currently drive a new Civic 1.8S, so not a direct comparision, but the rear vision is very restricted with that pointless spoiler moulded into the rear window.
I think the older type R has more bhp than the 170 and looks more boy racer than the Focus, which tends to be a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing.
I think the one to avoid is the Focus RS, particularly early ones, Ford had a lot of grief with that model
The Ford looks better the Honda is betther built and much quicker!. If it were me I would go with the Honda.
Honda Civic every time. The type r is a stonking car that you can doddle around town in(if you so wish) or thrash the living daylights out of it and it wont bat an eyelid. Just being devils advocate but have you ever looked at an Integra DC5? 20 bhp more than the civic, in my opinion looks much better, a bit more exclusive and still all the attributes of the Honda marque. Ford realised that theST170 wasnt doing the business so brought out the Focus RS which is a different animal altogether but still make crazy money second hand. Good luck, its a nice position to be in.
