HI Your view's on the MAZDA MX5 early models CHEERS?
Answers:
Great little car and largely responsible for Mazda brand identity crisis. Not even refered to as a Mazda Miata or Mazda MX-5 Just Miata as it is known in USA. Early generation one cars with 1.6 liter engine pop up headlights are being driven in anger each weekend by racers across the country and autocrossers alike like the handling.
Avoid cheap ones (Under 2K). They are likely to be Jap Auction Grade 3 Eunos, or many-ownered UK models with low spec (less Air Con), high miles and little servicing. Spend £3.5K on a 1995 low mileage (50K) car with a couple of Sunday sunny afternoon drivers.
If you have to buy an earlier one, check if it's UK or Jap Spec. Some people just swap the badges. Check the hood and on Jap ones the sills. JDM cars aren't waxproofed. Seats are expensive to recover. Trim bits, OEM and Aftermarket are cheap. Engine shouldn't be smokey.
i have a k reg eunos import and its great fun lovely car i have also just been given a brand new 06 mx5 hire car and its crap its so small and its no fun at all, it leeks like a collinder and its just no patch on the old one, give me the old import one anyday
The first couple years in the USA 1990-1992 there were drive shaft issues which were recalled. The 1.6 liter, 4 cyl which was bored to 1.8 in 1994 had very few differences. The 1.6 was a little "peppier" but the 1.8 was stronger feeling.
There was a special edition every year which was unnesccesary, but the 1993 black with red interior was pretty cool. After 1999 when the body changed, and the headlights were flush with the body i felt it lost its sports car appeal. The new ones are somewhere in space with the crazy designs of the honda elements. The power hard top is the down fall of a fun, little roadster.
if its an early one,1.6 litre,it will have lots of valve noise as a rule on higher mileage engines.
