When was the first sun roof put on a car?
Answers:
The first American car with a "sunroof" was a Ford Sunliner in 1954. Mercury had a similar model the same year. Both were not what we think of when we think of a sunroof. The "sunroof" was permanent, tinted plexiglas that covered the entire front seat area. The rear seats had a metal roof over them.
James Bond's Aston Martin had one in the mid-sixties that unwanted passengers were catapulted through.
VW made a cloth sunroof that was hand cranked around 1954.maybe earlier.
The earliest one on record was available in 1947 if you lived in the UK:
The A40 Devon (and similar 2-door A40 Dorset) were automobiles sold by the Austin Motor Company from 1947 through to 1952.A sliding sunroof and heater were extra cost options on the UK market.
Probably around the same time as metal roofs started appearing - about the 1920s.
I have definitely seen pictures of 1920s Austin Sevens with cloth sunroofs, for example http://www.bluebird-electric.net/bluebir.
