UK road and car tax laws?

I am thinking about purchasing a mates car to work on for £50, thing is I have no driveway or garage (park on the street outside the house). In our neighbourhood we have resdiential parking permits so nobody from out of the street can park there.

So can I apply for SORN even if the car is parked on the roadside? If not, do I have any other options if I drive the car? It is good condition (eg, not rotting all over the place) but runs very poorly. Thanks!

Answers:
You need to park it off road in a garage or similar to declare it SORN.

If you are to park it on the road it needs to have road tax.

Have a look at http://www.dvla.gov.uk for more details
You cannot declare it SORN. It needs to be parked off road!
dont buy it
Find a kindly neighbour who has not got a car on their drive, offer them a couple of bob, only way I'm afraid.
NO. As long as the vehicle is parked or is on a public highway, it has to be taxed (vel displayed correctly) and covered against third party insurance risks.

There are no exceptions to this.

The DVLA has a very comprehensive website, and will answer questions too.

No, SORN means statutory OFF ROAD notification, which means it cannot be on the public roads without tax. Even though they are residential parking permits it is still a public road, just with parking restrictions for non-residents. Your only option is to get it taxed, so if it has a current MOT you are ok till that runs out. If not, you are stuffed sadly, and in this instance don't buy it.
Yes you need to tax it if it's on the public highway, and it will be even though it's residents only parking.

You need to fix it before the MOT runs out or you can't tax it.

So if it has no MOT and also needs tax, don't buy it if it can't pass an MOT instantly.
To be left on the road it must have a current MOT, Insurance and a valid tax disc or you will be breaking the law.

Sorry there are no exceptions.
SORN means off the road, any public road. Not sure about a private road. Has the car an MOT; can you get the money together to insure and tax it? Would it be possible to work on the car where it is (presumably off-road?)
Sorry, if its parked on the road you must pay tax.
NOPE, don't even make the mistake of parking it on the road, the fine will be more than the £50 you pay for it! You can only apply for a SORN if the car is parked off the road, on private property i.e. driveway or garage. So, you either pay the £100 - £190 for car tax, or forget about buying the car!
