Volkswagen Golf or Vauxhall Astra?

It's almost time to buy my wife a car that she'll be ok driving, but that I can nick off with every now and then. She drove a 1.4TD Golf last week (as a hire car) and quite liked it - so what others of similar size or style would you recommend and why?

Answers:
vauxhall astras (or ashtrays) arent that bad but there just not good, the interior can be very basic, the handling well you may as well be driving a hovercraft as the front end is very light and can have a tedency to skip across the road in wet conditions when cornering or leaving a roundabout, golfs are alot better fairly good on petrol, solid build and quite fun to drive(and look better), what about a clio 1.4 or 1.6 the 1.4i is fairly sporty but not to thirsty again fairly solid and will hold the road well.hope this helps!
I would go for the Gold Diesel. It's German made, so reliable and you get superb fuel economy with it being a diesel. Stay away form Vauxhall, although they are nice looking cars, they are having alot of problems with them in the engine bay.
Peace o pi, oops cake let her descide and go hire the veh for a weekend drive it day AND night nlet her make the choice,,,,, safer that way then she cant blame you. Know what I mean??
I'd go with the Astra - as robust as Volkswagens are, they tend to require a lot more servicing as they get older so if you're guna have it for five years or more go with the Vauxhall or a Ford or Honda (Hondas would be my top choice, most reliable and basic yet really nice to drive, any model from just a Jazz to the boy racer ones)
Focus, (good car) yep go with the golf, DONT let her have a peugeot 206 (trouble) my mr's hates hers!! but going back to focus reliable good runabout, not expensive on repairs, golf can be a little expensive on repairs and servicing? get her to test drive a focus? Vauxhall had 1 never again, good new but 3 yrs down the line if used alot trouble!!
I've owned many cars and when i bought my first golf i fell in love with it,im driving a V.W Jetta v5 now and i tell you i will always be a V.w fan,you cant beat the german engineering, its a fact
The new Astra VXR is very nice indeed. Better than all the Golf models but quite expensive!!
Give the Fiesta TDCi a go, I hired one last month and put 900 miles on it. It feels solid and I was returning up to 45+ mpg in it. It looks smart and is quite roomy too. There seems to be plenty of them on the roads these days so maybe that is telling us something. The stereo is quite good too.
Definitely a German or Asian car.

Less problems that way.
I love my Megane and I've had both Golfs and Astras in the past. I'd definitely prefer the Megane for comfort, reliability, ecenomy, power and space.
you should get what ever she wants because then everybody is happy and life is better
vauxhall astra, seriously you can buy mine before it goes in the local paper this week. £800 contact me to look. bargain
Nothing wrong with the handling on an astra, I have a 2003 1.4 hatchback and it can handle everything I throw it into. Did i mention that I've had 3 years trouble-free motoring?
