Ive got 1k to spend on cheap diesel car for work, what would you buy?

its going to get the **** kicked out of as i leave it parked up on rough *** council estates but it will need all the usual mod conns a/c ew cd etc and preferably have a bit of power as well

Forget Opel, Volvo, etc. Go for VW Golf 1,9 SDI (or TDI), VW Polo, or Skoda Fabia / Octavia, Seat Leon / Toledo (same mechanics, transmissions and engines as VW). 'Cause VW is proven quality. No Citroen, Renault, Opel or Fiat can beat it, trust me. Peugeot is pretty good, but Germans have better diesel engines and parts quality. "Pump-dusse" sistem in VW TDI engines would last longer than "common-rail" sistem in JTD (italian) or HDI (french) motors and will spend little bit less fuel.

A Volkswagen or Volvo diesel. I don't think you are going to find a used Mercedes diesel out their for only 1K.
you can get good td xsara right and cheap i had 1 for a year and it didnt let me down once
i would pass on deisel period. Deisel is more expensive than gasoline and you have to maintain them more closely than gasoline vehicals. There are a lot of good cars that get good mileage out there. Look for a cheap Escort or Civic or something.
Do you need a/c in the UK?
I'd consider the cheaper VW, Golf(?), the Passat may be pricey.
Are there a lot of options for diesels there?

Volvo would be the best if the estate is dodgy! if not a jap car as they last and last for ages

Id get a peugeot 206 or if you can get a 205 in good condition. I used to have the 205 and got great mileage, now have a 106 (petrol) and would not get anything other than a peugeot next time I renew my car.
