How do people become airline pilots?
Answers:
First, go get an FAA medical. You don't want to spend anything on a career if you don't qualify medically. Second, go see a nearby flight school or join a local flying club. Take a few lessons to see if you really like it as much as you think. You can get your private rating and continue with more ratings, all the way up to ATP, Airline Transport Rating.
Get a 4-year degree, get a private pilot license, get all additional ratings (instrument, commercial, multi-engine, ATP). Fly a lot (either on their own, in the armed services, or for smaller businesses) until they get enough experience to apply for an airline position.

Get license, apply & fly.
Pilots start off by getting their Private pilot certificate then Instrument rating, and then commercial pilot. The real thing about it is that airlines will not hire low time pilots. Most go on to get their Certified flight instructor and Certified flight instructor-instrument so they can build time while teaching flight. A 4 year degree is not required by most airlines although it is preferred.
