Protection For Car Upholstery?

My car seats are white-well the outer part of the seat is done in white upholstery.
I have heard that if you spray and spray this area with Scotchguard or the equivalent it will keep it cleaner than normal. I thought Scotchguard was a waterproofing agent for coats and shoes? Also I been told you can protect your carpets with this also?
Any advice appreciated

Blue Coral is a company that makes many interior protection/ cleaning/ conditioning products. I have used many of their products on all of the cars I own(ed). Their products are pretty reasonably priced and can be found at any auto parts store. As far as the scotch guard, I thought that was just for waterproofing things as well.
Scotch-guard is for waterproofing. That is how it protects against stains. It will not let the staining liquid (coffee, etc.) soak into the fibers.
