Can you recommend a highly economical diesel family-sized car that's not too old?
Answers:
Audi A4 19TDI
Golf 19 TDI
VW PASSAT 19TDI
All have the same diesel engine all return about the same mpg. all damn good.
Diesel cars are awful. You are not going to care about the extra fuel bill in 100 years from now anyway.
Volkswagen Jetta diesel. I have owned two of these and would happily buy another. They are extremely economical, comfortable and durable. The engine is virtually indestructable, given good maintenance. They handle excellently and have enough power to deal with mountains (best with supercharged engine).
Of course, if you want to spend the money, any of the Mercedes diesels will do the trick.
vauxhall zafiras are great cars they are powerful and vauxhall make outstanding deisel engines. they can carry 7 people of there can be a van for moving lots of stuff as seats collapse into the floor and move right forward legroom is excellent. family near us have 1.9 litre deisel with disabled kids they use it nonstop very quiet for a diesel engine. i have also seen them tow a fairsize caravan with it to.

How about a mercedes benz? They have been making diesel cars for decades. But whatever you buy make sure it has a turbo charger on it as normally aspirated (no turbo charger) diesel engines dont have a lot of power.
Volvo V70/S80 D5, very nice cars
