Which car should I buy?

I need to buy a car which is very economical so which car does good MPG and isn't as weak as shi.t? I was looking at the corsa 1.3cdti or astra 1.3 cdti. Or even a vw lupo 1.0. I would ideally like a 5dr hatch. All answers appreciated.

i have been driving a toyota prius for a year .the road tax is £30. .and no congestion charge if you are in london.
it is not as economical as they say but that may be the way i drive it. my average is approx 50mpg., the best bit is when you are creeping along and would normally be in a low gear using fuel, it uses no fuel it runs on the battery that has been charging when petrol is being used.
i was used to driving a Saab2.5ltr very nippy.but this prius seems to nip about just as fast.
audi a3
get a horse and cart
Hi ya Honda Not saying this as its your name but Ive got a Civic best car ever cheap economical and is definitely not weak as s***t
just 4 record didnt say honda as its your name no wonder fudgie called you what he did you got serious issues dont go for honda but y bother asking for advice d***k
Fiat Punto, they're great!
Get whatever,,whenever.wa..ker.
my choice would be the corsa 1.5 diesel for economy and reliability but all vauxhalls are ok for the money
Corsa is probably a good bet and with the money you save you could do a few track days.
Since you don't like Honda, my recommendations are out the window. Based on the car names, I suspect you are European and the only manufacturer you've given me is VW. I liked them until they priced themselves out of my range. The engine sizes you give all look like good fuel economy. In Canada, the dealers have a sticker in the window showing expected fuel economy and this is usually attainable unless you like to jack rabbit start and charge down the roads at full throttle. Until you learn better, start with a car that your family or friends have found to be good performers. You also want to consider maintenance costs as 5.4 L/100 with a 90 euro alternator every year does not match 6.7 L/100 with a 1100 euro alternator every 4 years.

Good hunting and safe driving.
Your best bet isn't just a car with a small engine today. I have 4 cars because of my work (self-employed and need to provide staff cars) one of which is a 2.3 Ford Scorpio. It offers fuel consumption of 28MPG round town, 42MPG on a run, and about 34.7MPG combined. I also have a Renault Clio 1.2 which gives 31MPG round town, 47MPG on a fun, and around 36 combined. The Clio is a cheaper car to run, but what a price you pay. he Clio is much better than I expected but given the choice I'd take the slightly increased fuel consumption all the time for a chassis that responds the way you need all the time and the extra comfort the Scorpio offers.

The trick is today not getting the smaller engine, it's getting the most efficient engine. A 4 cylinder engine is most efficient sized about 1.9L, therefore it's best to head towards this level. You risk almost no loss of fuel consumption at this point while gaining a far better car to drive.

If you drive a 1.0 your efficiency rating is around 26%, but a 1.8 gives you over 30% efficiency today, therefore offering much more energy from a similar amount of fuel. The theoretical best for efficiency is apparently a 5.1 Litre 8 cylinder that could offer over 35% efficiency, although at this size it will gobble fuel no matter what!
