In england?

i live in england. can anyone tell me..as in cars, why we call a dashboard. a dashboard.

Answers:
Because early cars used to have dash pots fitted to them for oil and fuel priming of carbs hence 'Dash Board'

In a dash pot, there is frequently some sort of a viscious fluid in a chamber, or cylinder, that has a loosely fitted piston or similar device, possibly a disk, that is moved through the fluid by the governor. It doesn't take much effort to move the piston, or whatever, through the viscious fluid slowly, but as the motion of the governor tries to speed up, the viscious fluid prevents the governor arm, or drive, from responding too quickly. At the same time, small changes in the operating position of the governor are also accomodated easily.

Otherwise the engine speed may tend to oscillate back and forth without a dash pot. Some other dash pots work in a similair manner, but they use air being compressed through a small orifice to accomplish the same thing. Some dash pots are even mechanical, using a small geared up flywheel where the inertia of the flywheel provides the dash pot effect.

In any case, the faster the governor attempts to move it's output arm, or shaft, the dash pot's reaction is to increase the effort, or force against the governor's action and slow down the govornor's motion without reducing the system's over all control sensitivity to small changes in the governors position.

The design of the dash pot has to be such that it allows the governor to do it's job in a timely manner, neither too slow, causing large slow over shoots in engine speeds, nor too fast, causing rapid oscillations in engine speed. Some dash pots have adjustments for controling the rate of response and others are designed with fixed settings, designed to work in a specific application. In the case of a fluid, or liquid type dash pot, the type, or I should really say the viscosity of the fluid over some operational temperature range, is critical for proper operation.

A dash pot is basically just like a double acting shock absorber, but with no internal springs, gas chambers or other devices that add a fixed force or load on the device. That is not to suggest that an automotive shock absorber is appropriate for an engine speed governor application as it would probably be to big or strong or whatever to be useful.

Its called a dashboard most places in the world when you translate it.

Why ask this question??
Why are you called Harry?
Why am I called Kirsten?
Why have you wasted 5 points on asking a stupid question?
Its derived from the Spanish : DashoBordia.
For the same reason you drive on a parkway and park in a driveway.
Originally, a "dashboard" was the upturned front of a horse-drawn chariot or waggon, which protected the driver from mud and debris thrown up by the horse's hooves.
