Why can't I receieve MW on my car radio?
with my old car once. Brought a stereo - MW would only work
when the engine wasn't running - sold it to my boss, and it works fine in his car! This stereo though . can't get a thing!

Its all to do with the sun.
MW is very prone to interference from the sun,
During the night when the ionosphere cools down then radio waves are reflected and you should be able to hear MW stations from Europe..I dont think there are any MW stations left in the UK.
Most modern car antennas are tuned to the VHF (FM) portion of the band . To receive medium wave you need a longer antenna .
All you probably hear is static and noises from your car engine .This is indicating that your receiver is working and at maximum gain ,but there are no stations available.
The electrics, in particular the alternator causes interference. Some cars have suppressors fitted, i think you can get them fitted

You obviously have an aerial problem. Your aerial is either old, poor condition, bad wiring, insufficient. Replace the aerial, and install it properly, and you should be OK.
If your aerial is one of those things that is combined with the heated rear screen elements a la Ford Sierra, then it's probably the signal booster not working, or you have cut the supply to the signal booster when you replaced the head-unit.
Could be break in the aerial lead.Check continuity from aerial to inner pin on aerial plug.A M is low frequency and is blocked, but higher frequency FM signal can jump the break (with some loss of signal level)but still enough to allow radio to work.
Also A M more affected by electrical engine interference.
Fit suppressor capacitors to alternator output andignition coil.
Fit new resistive plug leads.
