Parking in a private car park in the U.K?

Hi, I went into my local supermarket and they had put signs up saying "PARKING TIME 2 HRS MAXIMUM" and then under that was written in smaller letters "£70 charge for breech of this rule we WILL trace your cars details". My question is how are they allowed to do this as the car park is private propert therefore NO criminal act has been commited. Is this not a breech of the data protection act?

Answers:
it maybe private property to the owners but the owners reserve the right to how long you may stay and they can impose a fine if you over stay your welcome time limit , this is because by clearley displaying the sign they show all there trms and conditions of parking on there property ,when you park there your accepting thoses terms and conditions there by entering a contract of conditions with the owners if you break the contract they have a right to trace your car to enable them to impose a set fine or penilty charge . and that is acutal civial law .
They own the car park and can do what they like. Sometimes they lease the carpark to the council. Each car is tracked from the time you enter to the time you leave electronicaly. They then contact D.V.L.A at swansea for you address and hey presto you have to pay.
The DVLA hold details of all UK registered vehicles, DVLA hold data such as Veh, Make, Model, Registered Owner, Address , Engine Number, Chasis number. Police hold the other part of the file on a system called PNC (police national computer) which holds markers - I.E Stolen / Scrapped / Found / Removed / Information markers . Only police can View the full file, DVLA obviously have access to their own information and will Cost your local supermarket £30-£40 per data request to the DVLA disclosures department for your vehicle details. This data is avalible under the freedom of information act. The can only see the Vehicle and registered keeper details, any information regarding the vehicle for example if it was involved in an armed robbery will not be shown on the disclosure.

And whats more at £70 per car - they make a nice profit just on you being there 121 minutes
Yes they can do this and they WILL send the bailiffs to you if you get a ticket and dont pay. Believe it or not DVLA actually sell your information to these private parking/clamping firms which allow them to trace you. They patrol in van round the different private car parks they operate in, logging in your vehicle exactly the same as a street warden would. If you overstay they issue a parking fine and very few get away with it on appeal. Disgusting but true.
Any car park is private property under law. The supermarket will own the car park and have to pay business rate etc on it. Most private car parks put signs up to deter people from parking in them when they are not shopping in there shop or just parking there to go else where. They are within their right to put any barriers up they wish as it will be their property.
I think we should all go to Tresco, park for two hours, fill a trolley up with loads of frozen food and dump it at customer services because our parking time has run out!!!

I saw this too, they want our money but in a minute they will be chasing us around the store with a stick to get us to spend our money faster.

Protest to change.
Actually the dvla is breaking the law by selling your details on the police are the only ones allowed to have your details.

when i registared by car with the dvla they did not ask if they could sell your deatils which as i understand it a break of european law and an old british one still in use today.

All priveate car parks are entitled to do is put a ticket on your car at the time and not after the event has happened only speed camera can do thatcause they cann not put a ticket on you, put private car parks can.
It's about 'contracts' that some companies have with respects of 'Controlling' and 'Security' for, say, supermarkets. These companies (and I'm uncertain of the exactness of this, but..) if they are bonafida or Registered in some area, then they can apply for car drivers details from the Vehicle Licence Register Office (the name may be different ..but generally known as the VRO) for your details, and which WILL be supplied.

This is another 'Legalised' way of the Treasury making money, by supplying drivers details (and, incidentally, even if the ones applying for them are / have a Criminal Record.) to those who claim to have a ('legitimised') need of it.

Be careful just where you park.
Sash.
Plod supply details so you ask Plod to prosecute Plod for breaking the law. I think rocket science is not needed here to understand
!) the Law is the Law and
2) No way is anyone going to enforce it.
