Why after travelling for many miles in fog on uk motorways do we then get illuminated signs telling us of fog?

Because we live in a nanny state and there are many stupid motorists. If you can't see the fog without being told, you really shouldn't be out alone - let alone in charge of 1 ton of moving metal!
If they didn't put up a sign, they might get sued by the people who didn't notice it was foggy.
