Yeah sounds to me that you have the permanent live connected but not the ignition live. If the wires are intact I suggest getting a PC2-18-4 from halfords and installing that lead into the car, All it does is put two leads together from the same source (perfectly safe) in order to power the ignition and permanent live. It means that your radio will come on without ignition but that was how the VW should have come with as well. Also don't cut any of the Kenwood loom if the stereo is new as it can invalidate the warranty!
Electrical mints, that's novel!
If you have already plugged it in to the kenwood and the plugs match you are half way there.you need to see if their is an ignition live.this goes live when you turn the ignition on and start the car.from what i can remember they don't have one..if so you will need to join the constant live and the ignition live together..constant is yellow and ignition is red ( this is on the kenwood ) Try joining the yellow to the red .. their is usually bullet connectors to aid this .what should happen is the stereo is powered up all the time so you will have to manually switch it on and off.I hope this helps.good luck .. let us know how you get on.
