When was insurance for motor cars introduced?

What was the first car to be insured and when was it made compulsory?

Answers:
The first ever recorded fatal car crash in England was in 1930 in Harrow on the Hill. I could well believe that was when car insurance was introduced
1930 in the uk, dont know about other countries. ;)
Car insurance entered the field of law in 1930 when legislation was introduced requiring every person using a motor vehicle on the road in the UK, or permitting others to use that vehicle, to be insured against damage by causing personal injuries to third parties.
I heard it was 1898 and the insurance sold was only against "hitting a Horse."
