I have a VW GOLF and for the past 2 days something has appeared on the dashboard when I check the manual?

it says:exhaust emission warning light.
what does that mean? is it serious?help please

Answers:
Take it to the garage for checking. Before you start buying spares.
No but it is expensive. It just means your catalytic converter is losing it's efficency. Your car will still drive and perform like normal however you will have to get it fixed before your car can pass state inspection. VW cats are pretty expensive, you may want to try Midas or another local shop.
Means you need to take it to the garage. Could be that your exhaust is burst.
How old is the car? Check if your motor warranty might cover it (probably not, due to as it's a consumable-type part like your tyres and filters) but you never know.
I have had the car before and I had a constant problem with the lights popping up and not meaning anything. So take it to the garage but if the light keeps coming up just forget about it. Its annoying but not worth the aggravation.
the cat is naff it will affect the running and the fuel consumption get IT fixed A.S.A.P
It means one of the many sensors on the vehicle is getting a reading that is out of tolerance. It may just mean a bad sensor. It's okay to drive it in to have it checked. Don't put it off for long or if there is a problem, it *may* get worse. Also you won't pass a smog inspection with it on.
5 of the 6 answers so far are total nonsence.

The light in your dash will come on for something as small as a brake light bulb not working. £0.38. If the brake bulbs are ok take it to a V W dealer & they can check the fault memory & fix the fault. This is the cheapest way to fix.
its mostlikely to be the lamba sensor fited to the catlytic convertor
Basically what it is meaning is that there is a malfunction within the emission control. when the light comes on the engine ecu(the computer) goes in to limp mode. preset values so the engine can run. the best thing you could do is to take it to vw garage they can check via the diagnostics. IT would most likey be one of the oxy sensors( lambda) if two are fitted or the cat converter..
Catalytic converter, a common problem in the VW Golf. needs to be replaced.
depends on how old your car is - it could be the or one of your o2/lambda/oxygen sensor that is faulty or getting a wrong reading due to your catalytic converter is on the way out or your air flow meter(if one is fitted) is again faulty or detecting an incorrect reading - they are all linked together and are to do with fuel and emission regulation - needs a diagnostic check in a garage( not necessarily a dealer) to find out what for sure
Could be a bad oxygen sensor. You may have two in the system. Get them checked.
TAKE THE BULB OUT.
Is it a check engine light and you spec'ed the code, or did it tell you directly that you have a emissions problem? Either way, what it means is that something in the emissions (exhaust) system is out of specs. This can include the oxygen sensors, MAF sensor, MAP sensor, EGR valve, EECS system, the fuel cap may be loose, catalytic converter. You need to find out what the specific issue is, then you can go about getting it fixed, but it could be wiring, a fauly part, a vacuum hose.
An exhaust emission warning light can mean many things: From a bad catalytic converter to a bad O2 sensor or others. To pinpoint it, I need more information, like what code, what engine size, what year make and model. Emissions problems are warrantied at least 5 yrs or 50,000miles or some even to 7 yrs and 100,000.
Most emissions related answers above are good, but before garage, I would try a really good 'fuel system cleaner' or better still: 'fuel injector cleaner' to try and clear system and mainly lambda sensor before further garage checks.
Most modern fuel injected vehicles have several things that could cause this problem but I'll focus on the main ones. The car will have an "upstream" and a "downstream" oxygen sensor. These are on opposite ends of the catalytic converter and they function as a team monitoring the exhaust, checking the fuel mixture as they do so and reporting to the ECM (engine control module). If one or the other gets a bad reading or malfunctions, they will send an error code to the ECM and a light will appear on the dash. As another possibility, the catalytic converter itself could be becoming clogged and need replaced. You best bet would be to have it checked by a diagnostic computer in a shop or by a scan tool which can decipher the codes from the ECM. This will point you in the right direction. Good luck.
it could mean that one of your O2 sensors is bad or your catalytic converter is bad. When was the last time you had a tune up.
