A process called fractional distilation is used to separate out all the useful elements of crude oil. Fractional distilation is a process where by oil is heated to progressively higher temparatures. At set temperatures a different product is separated depending on the point it turns into a gas. The gas is then fed into a cooling chamber where, as it cools, it turns back into a liquid.
As well as petrol some of the other things to come out of crude oil (distilates) are used to produce many industrial and household solvents and cleaners as well as plastics and other fuels.

Over thousands of years, hundreds of millions of dead plankton and other sea creatures floated down to the sea bed and where covered by sediment, which in time through pressure of other sediment solidified into sedimentary rock. These rocks were covered by a cap rock, then tipped through earth movement and the plankton, which had now turned into crude oil rose to the top of the sedimentary rock where it was trapped in pools by the impermeable cap rock (rock which water cannot pass through).
The crude oil is formed into three layers - natural gas, brine (salt water) and oil. When the site is drilled firstly the gas escapes, is burnt off or bottled, then the brine is drained and lastly the oil, which is under intense pressure, is forced to the surface.
The crude oil is then heated to varying temperatures and one of the by products is petrol. - This is why it is called fossel fuel.
