Probally a desiel car.i think they have better pulling power than petrol engines. In all likleyness there is probally no one car that is the best since it depends on the driver and the condition of the car too.

What you need is a car that is certainly heavier than the load to be towed. You then need a car with an engine size that can tow without effort. If you continually need to change down a gear to climb even the smallest gradient then you will add hours to your journey and use an excessive amount of petrol. A minimum engine size would be a 2 litre.
It depends on the size of the caravan.
You can't go wrong with a V8 Landrover or Range Rover!

there is no such thing as the "best" car. There are so many factors to take into account. And a Defender is certainly not the first choice as they are just too "agricultural". I used to tow with a Ford Scorpio Estate. It drank the petrol at such a rate (it was a 2.9 12 valve) that I couldn't bear to have the trip computer on. I now tow with a 4Lt Jeep Cherokee, much better !! The caravan is a Lunar Solar Eclipse 615.
Volkswagen Toureg V10 diesel - you could tow a mountain if you had one.

A diesel or big petrol engined four wheel drive car like a Land Rover Discovery or Defender or Mercedes G-Wagen. The car should be heavy.
Try a Subaru. They are all 4wheel drive so excellent grip. Plus they are nice and quick when you unhitch the 'van.
I have a Subaru Legacy Outback and it will legally tow up to 1800kg, enough for 99% of caravans in the UK.
Land Rover Defender, Dodge Viper, Bugatti Veyron!! Actually the best car I been told for towing is an old renault 25 V6 2.7. Dunno if it would do so well now but 10 years ago they did better than just about anything. Very long-stroke engine that gave the power of a petrol engine and the torque of a Diesel.
VOLVO 940. They are spot on and a lot less bother than a Landrover.
