listen for a vacume leak thease are famos for tha vacume line under the manifold to break
The only way to stop the shake is to find out what is causing it. Is it missing? Is it only when you drive or all the time? There are lots of things it could be.

There are resonances at certain RPM's when a 4-cylinder is particularly rough, the gear-knob will shimmy, as will the rear-view mirror, and a little gas will stop it. A 4-cylinder engine, unless equipped with balancer shafts, such as the big Porsche 944 2.5, 2.7 and 3 litre engines, will always be a bit rough. I have a car with a V8 engine in it, and when it is idling, I can stand a £1 coin on its' edge on the air filter, and it stays put! A V8 is in perfect balance, as is a straight six, and a V12.
One way is to take it to a mechanic, It could just be your idling revs are to low or fuel is not getting to your carburetor, it could just be your air filter needs changing
I had a similar problem which turned out to be timing, just get a tuning mechanic to run a short test,he will check you belt tension etc and should not cost much,he can easily adjust your idling speed.
This will get worse if you do not get it checked out,with winter on its way,also get him to check your automatic choke as a matter of course.

If it is only vibrating on idle, it could mean that one cylinder is misfiring on idle. As this could be caused by numerous things, air leak, plug or plug lead breaking down, faulty distributor, etc., etc., the only real way to find out is to take it to a VW dealer with a diagnostic computer.
