Not sure if you would fail but I would always do what the instuctor teaches you. That way you can be sure to pass. I have been driving for so long now that like everyone i have picked up so many bad habbits & i am sure I would fail if i had to retake my test. Its best not to start these bad habbits in your test.
Don't think you would fail, aslong as you had the control under control and it wasnt rolling etc. They might prefer you to go into neutral with handbrake on though.
Best thing to do is check highway code, mock test books, DVLA website etc

You want to be in first gear in case of some sort of emergency comes down the road and you have to get out of the way fast.
Keep it in gear with your foot on the clutch and brake pedal. As long as you are in control of the vehicle.
Yes you need to be in neutral if your foot slips of the clutch you know what may happen,stalling will be frowned on.but in saying that Good Luck to her.

My understanding is that in the US it is illegal to be in neutral at a stop light. You should be in first, so that if something happens that you need to move your vehicle, you will be able to do so as quickly as possible. I also believe that it is technically illegal to change gears while in an intersection, as while you are in neutral, you do not have complete control of your vehicle in the most dangerous portion of a road. But at a stop, keep the clutch in, the car in first, and do NOT engage the parking brake.
Should be in neutral, depress clutch and select first when the lights go red and amber. When they go green, let the hand break off, ease off clutch and ease on the gas..If you were to stay in first and hold the clutch and foot breaks at the lights, I would fail you.

I would say that if your friend thinks she will be at the lights for a while, then it is best to go into neutral with the handbrake up. If she's not going to be there long, then I don't think that it is a problem to stay in first gear, so long as the clutch is down and the handbrake applied. The best thing to do is to follow the instructions given by her instructor, as that way she'll be sure to do the right thing. Good luck!
If you want to look things up in more detail, there's a link to the Highway Code below. I looked through it, but didn't see it explicitly state that you have to put the car in neutral, so I think either way is fine, so long as she is comfortable and confident in what she is doing.

I'd was taught to stay in first, clutch down & handbrake on, if you were first or second in line at a red light, further back in the queue put it in neutral.

If at a complete stop for a possibly extended period - In neutral - handbrake on.
The driving instructor should know. Sorry it was about 6 yrs since I did my test and I can't say which one for defino if I aint sure.
