I have a VW Golf CL, 1992, 1.8L which turns over but won't start, it was running fine just few hours earlier
Answers:
possibly fuel filter, but doubt it, to test it remove air filter, take rubber fuel hose off carburetor(about 7mm diameter), get an assistant to turn the engine over, you should get a good flow of fuel out of the pipe!
Have you checked the timing belt?(black cover about 30mm wide on left of engine(as you look at it)unclip cover and bend slightly you can see the belt)
most likely ignition fault(so check this first), remove one spark plug(any one you want, but left one is easiest(next sentence)), connect lead back up and put plug through engine lifting eye(front edge of engine on left), again get assistant to turn over you should see a spark, that is good, if no spark remove multiplug on distributor and using a straightened paper clip touch the middle connector of the multi plug to earth(top of engine bolt) spark?(must have ign on)if no spark probably coil at fault, buy one from http://www.gsfcarparts.com
Def not battery if turning over ok!
without looking
that's all folks!
hope this helps.
Check the engine oil level.
Check to see if it's your head gaskit
I agree with fatbadge I'm going over to help him out asap
Im guessing it has stripped the teeth from the timing belt.
