Thinking of buying an old car (10 yr old) to modify, any ideas on best make and model to work on?

Answers:
It is all about MONEY.

Before you select the model or the make / check the modifications out there and how much they cost - then look at the prices with the used cars around.

I have one friend that does nothing but VW aircooled - I have another that does only Mini-Trucks; etc..

Next is Taste / IE: What you like when you combine that with the money factor you will find your car.
ford capri 2.8 injection mate or the laser version
i love imports, so go for a Honda or Acura.
VW golf durable, reliable. The parts are also cheap and easily accessible in uk.
Toyota mr2
mk 2 golf gti, best car i ever had, still looks a class act today, there is so much you can do to them, but i warn you it will take over your life lol.
chevey caprice i have a 89 and im restoring it no part is over 400.00 im geting it painted champaine red with red interior.
VW golf mkII GTI, reasonably priced parts, easily accessible, and golfs are reliable runners, had mine now for 3 years without too many problems.
NOT a Ford Contour..mine is 8 years old and giving me hell lol
An early 240sx( i LOVE mine :P ), 300zx, Supra, RX7, CRX or MR2 should be fun and reliable at the same time.. Or a 5.0 Mustang or Capri( i miss mine :P ) should be fun too. You may opt for RWD, since it's easier to change the tranny or clutch, if problems arise.
Hi, depends on how far u want to modify the said vehicle, either a ford or a vw golf, but i would plump for the ford, as i think there are more goodies available for them than any other make, plus parts are more ready available for the older fords, especially on eBay
If you look in any of the modified car mags, probably the most modded car at the moment of that age is the Honda Civic EK4 type, 96-2001. The variety of stuff available is pretty much endless. They look well, are ultra reliable and are pretty easy to insure. Only problem is that if its individuality you are looking for, then this is not the car for you. Its a hard balance to find. Good luck. Modding a car is great fun, just keep it safe.
