Why is diesel more expensive than petrol?
Answers:
The duty is now the same as petrol - it used to be less.
The price difference now is due to a difference in demand: as well as there being more diesel-powered vehicles on the roads than there once were, diesel is also used in, for example, oil-fired heating systems, and demand there has increased because of recent hikes in gas and electricity prices. Where there's more demand, the price goes up.
Diesel is taxed more than petrol.
A car can go further on a tank of diesel than it can on a tank of petrol (Same engine size etc) therefore it is more expensive, but works out cheaper in the long run
i thought it was because you get more mpg with diesel but i could be very wrong !
It is a ripoff as diesel is less costly to refine and it is only the fact as others said here, a cash grab by oil companies due to more vehicles using it. OIL is bunker 6 when first out of ground and distilled all the way to JP4 which is jet fuel and Kerosene etc at the higher end of refining stages and diesel or # 2 furnace oil at the bottom of distillation process. It was the same when all cars switched to UNLEADED gas and the prices went UP not DOWN as it should have been, as gas IS UNLEADED at its state from distillation and the lead was added at an expense to producers to stop the engine pinging and cost money to add it, buy the lead and pay to add to gas via wages and time and equipment etc. All gas is unleaded as I said when it comes out of refinery and it is graded according to amount of octane added to it for you and I the suckers that have to pay the rip off prices for something that is already UNLEADED.
Diesel is actually cheaper to make than gasoline. And diesel is cheaper than gasoline almost everywhere in the world, excepts in some parts of USA.
USA hasn't built any refineries for a long time. And perhaps now there is greater demand for and relative shortage of diesel fuel in USA.
were i live it is much cheaper than petrol
In my area Diesel is CHEAPER than petrol
diesel did not used to be more exspensive than petrol its only in these last few years with the onset of the much improved diesel engine fuel system that has increase in price you get diesel that is used off the highway that is very cheap very low tax EG builders plant highways plant JCBS ect use RED diesel it is died for the Customs and excise people to identify if any one is found running there road transport on it if you are found doing that your car ect is compounded and you are banged up so I would advise White diesel only in your car
its more to do with taxation i the UK than anything else, the slightly higher refining costs translate into practically nothing per gallon. Blame the thieving policies of Brown and Blair
