Ford Escort Temperature gauge reading low?

i have a 1996 escort cabrio 1.8 si and the temp gauge reads low just into the normal when the car is running, when sat in traffic it goes up to about 3/4 of normal and fan comes on, anybody know what the problem could be?

Answers:
try a new sender for the gauge first as these arent very reliable, your car may be fine and its the gauge that acting daft.
It seems normal,excuse the pun
Air lock in the Water system. Try the heater .if its cold , thats the problem..
could just be the thermostat sticking, radiator could be blocked, or more seriously could be the first sign that the head gasket is on its way out.
sounds like the theromstat is not functioning properly, the reason why the temp gauge is not registering anything whilst driving is cause there is air flow to naturally cool the engine and this is the reason why it is heating when at an idol.
if you are worried about the head gasket monitor the water consumption and check your oil, if it is a cloudy milky colour then get your car to a mechanic asap
