Steering wheel knobs?

Like the ones you get on the steering wheel in lorries. I know they are illegal in small vans. But can you have one on medical grounds? Where do i go for an exemption certificate if applicable?
I got restricted strength in my arms and can't afford power steering really. And i can't get mobility allowance because i can walk the required distance. Never mind i can't carry the shopping. It's when i pull a muscle trying to park it gets to me.
I wish i knew the proper name for them. But everyone that knows what i'm on about just calls them knobs.
Helpful answers only please.

from a trucker.. yes you can get a special one for a car, and a certificate too, to make it all legal. i would start with the dvla in Swansea, they could help point you in the right direction, also any kind of disabled driving projects, such as motability. i know you may be saying i don't get motability, but they could help also.

as for the real name, you know it already, just steering wheel knobs, or steering wheel aid knobs
There are plenty of organisations who offer help for people with disabilities - I suggest that you contact your local council's social services department to see if they can put you in touch with one of them.
why don't you ask the local law enforcement agency if they are ok to use on medical grounds and get document from your doctor saying you need to use one to make it easier for you to steer
Check out this website for them. There are 2 listed.
I've heard them called suicide knobs here in the US.
Just buy one and wory about the legal crap later if needed.

I have a problem with my left shoulder which means I have neither the strength or the mobility to use a steering wheel 'correctly'. I have had a knob fitted for some thee years now and have never had a problem. As far as I can determine, there is no law against the use of knobs as it can be seen to be giving you full control of the vehicle in as much as you can turn the wheel completely without removing or repositioning your hand.
By the way you write I'd say your a brit. Here in the states those knobs are illegal for safety reasons in a crash those knobs will punch right through your chest. If however you must have one make one it doesn't take a genius. 1. drill a small hole through your steering wheel. 2. get a knob a piece of wood half a screw driver handle use your imagination. 3. insert screw through the back of steering wheel into your knob viola your very own do it yourself steering knob! PS if your worried about the cops try a pair of small vice grips, they come off easily if you get stopped and will do the job.
