Should the fines for parking in disabled bays be larger to discourage able bodied drivers using them?

Watched people using the parking bays set for disabled drivers when they are clearly not disabled. these bays are set aside so people that need extra space can use them, let the supermarkets check if there is a card and if not clamp the lazy scum and fine them.

Answers:
YES YES YES!

I often take my Grandad out and so many times I see people parking in the spaces we should be able to but can't. It's frustrating as hell!
Yes. There are far too many lazy people out there who just park where they want. A £200 fine should stop them
The fines need to be big, and there needs to be more reinforcement. I always say something to the person who shouldn't park there if they don't have the tag. My fave line: So are you MENTALLY disabled, then? They usually don't care, but it makes me feel better.
yes they should.. i am disabled and i hate to go christmas shopping for my 2 kids and big family because by the time i park. i have to spend so much time walking in the store that by the time im just getting started im in such pain its time to leave and when i leave i drive threw the parking lots because im mad and check who really has the rights to park in the handicap spots and more than half of them dont.. and i get so angry because my family shouldnt have to suffer at the holidays because of my disbility
The fines don't necessarily need to be larger..better ways of enforcement would catch them more often. Policemen can't always be there to catch them.
fines should be a higher cost as it is more than an inconvenionce for someone who is disablded to have to park anywhere but up front.it is a very selfish thing people do and its sad that some people have no respect or compassion for people who physically are a little less fortunate than they are.
I never thought much of them until I lost a leg, and having problems with my other leg. Now they are a god send. I dont much care for people using them that dont need them.
They may not be disabled physically, or as far as you can see. They might have some other difficulty that you can't neccessarily see. Maybe they're deaf or something. Maybe someone has kids in buggies or something (that may not be so great an excuse, but what if one of them was autistic, ADHD, or had some other difficulty which might make the parents' lives harder?)

Other than that, people who are parking in the disabled parking bays when they aren't, yes they are lazy. I don't think raising the fines will help though, especially for those disabled drivers who now can't park there (there will always be someone, no matter how high the fines, because they think they can get away with it).
yes yes yes I often have to park away from the entrance to the store because non-disabled people have parked in the allocated spaces
Enforcement is the key. Stores have enough to do besides acting as a cop. Call the police. It is their job. You say some of these people do not look disabled. If the car has the proper tag, then you have a problem.
I get a kick out of the people who are disabled and leave the shopping cart in the next disabled slot. I don't get that attitude.
What I don't like is a clearly tagged car using a non-disabled slot, when there is a disabled slot available. they should stay on their own side.
there seems to be far too many disabled parking bays for my liking.
I dont think the fines should, necessarily, be larger but the areas should be policed better by the supermarkets are parking attendants. They don't seem to bothered to check up.
Larger than what? Every state and country has its own laws. We need to catch them doing it -- my city has a group of citizens who are trained to take photos and write down info and send it in and then people get tickets in the mail. I suspect that stops them from doing it. I think the fine is either $50 or $100; and I think $100 would send a good message.
you can not tell if alot of people are disabled ,some disability's don't show, some people chose not to be registered & just get on with life so why can they not park in a disabled spot ,
In Wisconsin, USA the fines are $500.and some still park in the disabled parking spots.
Iagree if they are not disabled clamp the car then make them wait for an hour before coming back to remove the clamp at a large cost
Yes I am disabled and was just coming or struggling out of the post office when some fit boy racer pulled up on the curb and rather than get out of his car asked me to post his letter in the post box 2 yards away needless to say I posted his letter being a more considerate person, shame I neglected to tell him his rear tyre was going flat.
cars not displaying the disabled badge should be clamped, and the owners should be made to pay £50 to have it removed, the proceeds should go to a charitable cause
i think they should its so unfair ppl who arnt disabled to use the desiganted bays my father in law is disable dwe go shopping quite a lot and 9 time souta 10 im not able to get in the designated space
disabled people have loads of time on their hands, the bays should be moved further away so those of us in a rush can get in and out quickly.
This is a problem, but I'm from South UK and here it almost seems that more people have disabled badges than don't.

Maybe they are giving these things away with cornflakes or something but my biggest problem when I take my kids shopping at local supermarket is that disabled drivers park ANYWHERE, including spaces supposedly reserved for 'Parent & Child' parking. If they do not have respect for other people (even other disabled people) how can they expect courtessy in return?

I also know of people that both lend their badges out, and borrow badges for easier parking.

Make the system WORK before you start trying to Police it!
You could put the fines up but i doubt it will stop the thoughtless idiots
