Answers:
one piston not firing, hence the rattling while idling and loss of power.
go back to the garage
Try putting a new astra on the exhaust
the timing might be off.. take it back to the garage
Sounds like it hasnt been fitted right.
Check the Vac pipe.
Check the manifold. Failing that look at the camshaft - if it's hanging out and sounds like a sewing machine - replace. Should be able to do it for less than 5 grand.
If it's fuel injection, they may have accidentally damaged the lambda (Oxygen) sensor in the exhaust system, so the cars engine management computer is getting an incorrect signal, so goes into a back up mode, allowing you to run on reduced power - it's only a possible problem though - take it back to the garage though, they should fix it for you.
Was it the correct diagnosis? If a cat is blocked you normaly get a whistling noise from exhaust, did you see the old exhaust if you shake it holding it downwards you will get bits like black volcanic lumps falling out. Also your engine management warning light would have come on.It sounds like your mass air flow meter is faulty .This could have caused your cat to go in the first place.Regards Mick
the cat has a sensor on it if this is faulty wil read that the cats still gone try unplugging it c if makes a difference thats wot i did on my vectra hope this sorts it for u
the exhaust is too big you need a pipe system the same size as the one originally fitted to that car, the back pressure and resonance would be all wrong
You need to check that the lambda sensor is fitted and plugged in correctly as this is the only thing that may affect engine performance that would normally be touched while replacing the exhaust system if that's okay then take the car back to the garage and get them to check it out
