Illegally driving overseas? I'm British, living in Italy - and apparently driving illegally in both places!
So much for the 'open frontiers' of the EU, eh?!
Or am I just misinformed/paranoid?
Answers:
You've made quite a common error, the time before you have to change your licence varies from country to country, but try pretending you've gone back to the UK for a month recently and re-emigrated to Italy.
I did that when I lived in Holland, having waited too long to change my licence (supposed to be after 12 months there), so officially I was supposed to take the Dutch driving test, but I got them to believe I had been back to Ireland by getting a letter from an Irish insurance company, I was still a named driver on another persons policy at the time, and they changed my Irish for a Dutch licence ;o)
Need to apply for an italian license after being there for 6 years. Why do people go and live abroad if they don't know this things.
Your UK licence should be a European licence. UK is part of EU, Italy is part of EU. If you pass test in EU it should be valid all over EU.
Don't worry, we are living in the north of Spain for 2 years and still have not got round to getting a Spanish licence. The good thing is if the police stop you they think you are a foreigner! Still, really must get it sorted out. But you would have thought that with EU and all that the licence would carry you in all countries.
i wouldn't know if your paronoid or misinformed but the easy answer is take 2 or 3 lessons (to check you haven't picked up any bad habits or lost any skills) and retake your test then you will know you licence IS valid
