Whats wrong with my Fiat Punto ??

Its a 3 door, 1.2l Fiat Punto (2000) and basically the overheating/water light keeps coming on.
It has sufficient water and the fan does come on. It has a tendancy to come on then turn off then on etc a number of times during one short journey.
I think it may be the thermostat because the heaters arent working very well anymore either.. but just wondering if any budding mechanics have an idea?

Answers:
"Flush" the radiator and motor.
First, take both hoses off the radiator. Put your garden hose in the top inlet and run a lot of water through the radiator, then repeat the task through the bottom hose ( about 5 minutes each or until the rust look goes away). Then take the top hose and run a lot of water through the motor (and then the bottom, same as for the radiator). It is a very simple task but messy so do it somewhere well thought out. There will be a lot of water runoff.
Second, replace or remove the thermostat. If you replace it make sure you get the correct one for your car. And make sure you put it in the correct way (Very important).
Thirdly, when you replace the water, include an anti-freeze/coolant, available from most hardware stores or auto shops (follow the mixture instructions too much will corrode your motor, too little and it will be a waste of time).
If these tasks do not fix the problem you may need to relpace the radiator. Not too expensive.
Also check the oil, if it has a milky appearance (water mixing with oil) you may have a cracked head and this will be expensive but must be fixed.
Does the water pump make a grinding noise? This also may need to be replaced. An easy task too. You will need to get some "sealant" for the replacing of the thermostat and/or the water pump.
it could be the water pump
the fault is easy to find...its yours! you purchased a fiat!!
has to be the wiring.
It's a Fiat Punto! What did you expect, it's why they're so cheap.
Try asking what's right with my Fiat punto?
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the heater matrix system whatever this was and not the radiator as I thought - or the thermostat.
Sounds to me like winters approaching, thats when you need your heating! Nothing works when its needed! Could be electrics, otherwise I agree, the problem is its a "FIAT PUNTO".
Do not play with overheating. Either trade it as soon as possible or get a mechanic to check it out. It might be a fuse or an electrical problem. If it is actually overheating--you have a potentially serious problem. Constant overheating can crack the head and bust your engine.
Boaz.
Hi , to start with , when the fan is trying to cool things off , feel if the top pipe to the radiator is hot , and the one on the bottom of the radiator is cold , if this is corrrect then the stat is not opening , meaning the water is kept in 1 area and not allowed to travel around the full water circuit - also this faulty stat would have an effect on your heater temp - you could take the stat out , and leave it out , or replace with a new one , ( about 5 pound ) its a cheap part to replace and its a common problem ..
My Friend has a fiat and it's always got something wrong with it, it's not a very good car, i think she would have spent the same amount of money buying a new car!
Well its a fiat. everything goes titsup. imagine the worst case scenario and that will be what is wrong.
sounds like a air block try bleeding the heater
IF your heater is cooler than normal and the engine is running hot as you say then it points to a circulation problem in the cooling system. The thermostat may be stuck closed so first thing is replace this as there is potential to damage your engine!
If after the heater is still cold but the engine is hot then the heater matrix may well be blocked and need replacing!
Hope this helps!
1 it's a Fiat

2 you could have an air lock in the system get a garage to check it out
well fiat does stand for Fix It Again Tony.possible head gasket
