Why are points on your license valid for 3yrs but you can't remove them for 5yrs.?

Answers:
Points are on your licence for 3 years for the purpose if you get any more points within that time they are taken into account, and they stay on your Licence for 5 years for Insurance purposes
Probably because this enables the law to be changed and the period extended to 5 years sometime in the future.
depending on what the code on the penalty you get ie speeding its on your licence for actually 4 years and the insurance people that your with should tell you that it actually only stays with them for 3 or 5 years again depending on the code of your mistake
