My car has broken down - can you help?

My car cut out while waiting at the lights. I couldnt get it to start up again. When I turn the ignition there is a sound, it sounds like something spinning around. What do you think it could be?

Answers:
what year make and model is the car? it sounds like it could be a timing belt.
Im spinnin around lalalalalalala..oh babes.I wanna make luv tonite.**** the car hun
Starter motor. Easy job.
it sounds like its time for a new car
tow it to a mechanic
write a check
Alternator
sounds like your starter, not too big of a deal to fix.yes, you could start it, they just wear out
more than likely its just the starter which is very easy and cheap to replace but the problem could be somewhere in the charging system such as the alternator or a battery or even something as simple as a starter cyliniod always try you cheapest things first until you find the problem.
Just to totally upset you your cambelt has snapped and your engine is now completely knackered. The starter motor is spinning the bottom half of the engine round much faster than normal because the top half isnt connected via the belt anymore. Probably a £400 repair.

Sorry..
It could be your starter, or it may even be your timing belt. If the engine turns over when you try to start it, the starter's good. The only way to check the timing belt is to remove a valve cover to see if the valves move when you try starting it.
Without hearing the sound, I'm only guessing--sounds like you may have broken the timing belt. That's a major pain; you'll need to replace the belt and then reset the engine timing.
sounds as if its a starter motor problem. depending on what type of noise it could also be the ring gear on your flywheel.feel free to mail me if you need any more advice(I'm a car technician)
The Bendix in the starter will not engage to turn the engine over.
New starter, but check battery and alternator first, try jump starting with cables.
It's the starter..little over 100 bucks, depending on what kind of a car
Battery maybe? Do your radio and lights still work? Was the weather warm at the time and the car starts when cooled off?
Sounds like a stuck pinion to me. Remove the starter and clean the pinion and shaft.

Is this a relatively new car? If so it could also be one of these remote control engine immobilisers which are activated by mobile GPS connectitvity.
I would set it on fire and claim on the insurance .. or take it to a garage .. first idea's best though i reckon
oh dear a ford broken down whatever next
