Catback exhausts & manifold?
Answers:
With all respect, think carefully about modifying this car. It's worth very little, it's dynamically poor and you might be well advised to save your modifying money towards a more performance-oriented car. If you want to lightly modify your Escort, stick to an improved induction system and an exhaust backbox - this is the rear silencer box that the tailpipe comes out of.
"Cat-Back" isn't a box! It's a term for partial exhaust systems that run from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe. About three quarters of a full exhaust system. This is to say that these don't include the manifold / downpipes. A full performance exhaust system including a replacement sports cat (if you chop the cat off, you'll fail your MOT if the car had a catalytic converter to start with) will give you more power but will cost you more than the car is worth.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
You could get a new manifold, but if you want a decent one your looking at about £300 for something like a Supersprint in Stainless. The power gain on a small engine will be minimal. As for Cat Back, it means anything back of the Catalytic converter, systems vary you can get a straight through pipe with just a back box, because there's no muffler it'll be loud but it will be the most freeflowing. straight through systems are also cheaper because your not paying for extra boxes. If you do decide to get a new system and want extra power get an induction/air filter from K&N or Jetex or Piper because air needs to come in faster if you want it to flow out faster. With both mods you will be looking at a maximum power gain of 8bhp if you're lucky. You may also have problems with the mixture running a bit on the lean side because of the extra air coming in. If you want to do it properly get a re-map. But at the end of the day it's an Escort!
