How do you set up the timing on a merc spinter 308 2.3(n reg) can anyone help me please as im at my wits end?
Answers:
Sounds like it's an interfering engine. What year? Overhead cam right? Those were non-interfering after around 75. The timing arrow should point straight at the top of the head. There is a dot on the head and an arrow on the cam. I'm not at my shop, but I'll look at my 2.3 when I go to be for sure. It's not hard to do. Check your cam without the belt on. Make sure it rolls freely. Make sure you don't have a bent valve. Good luck.
there are usually markings on the cam wheel and fly wheel to help align, these should be at top dead centre.
Get a Haynes Workshop Manual for your make and model of vehicle, every thing in these books are actually taken from full engine dismantle and rebuild and are the best on the market, except of course for the manufacturers workshop manuals which cannot be bought.
