they fit into holes in the roof at the side, the same as on any car
if this is an older car with "drip rails" the roof racks will slide to the width needed and then clamp on to the rails, use a bit of leather or rubber to protect the paint, dont over tighten the rack as it may bend the drip rail and expect some weird wind noise , good luck , have fun.

number one you spelled Galaxie wrong. Number two what do you mean by "roof rails"? Are you referring to a roof rack, like for carrying skis or luggage? If so why can't they fit in the trunk, which is big enough for a VW?
