College helps make car mechanics sexy
JOHN Houston, above, with his customised Vectra and another modified car fan, has welcomed the new course.HOT rods and low riders could soon be getting turned out by students at Greenock's James Watt College as it launches Scotland's first course in car customising.

A UK wide industry has built up around the boom in car modification and the course based at the Finnart Campus promises to introduce students to "the techniques used to take your average production car and transform it into a 'street car'".

The National Certificate is included in a programme of courses at James Watt College aimed at training people for a career in the automobile industry, which employs an estimated 850,000 people in the UK and is worth around £40 billion annually.

Ian Allison, head of the school of mechanical systems engineering, said: "The heightened interest in car body styling and performance is definitely not currently being provided for by the further education sector and it's a gap we intend to fill.

"After all, it's a logical progression for an individual who has undertaken training in vehicle technology".

The course has been welcomed by motoring organisations and car enthusiasts.

John Houston, who organises "car cruises" in Greenock, welcomed the news.

"I think it's a great idea," he said.

Sue Nicholson, RAC Foundation spokeswoman, also gave the course her backing.

She said: "Given there is such a shortage of trained technicians in jobs like this its certainly going to attract youngsters into the industry and James Watt College has to be congratulated on an innovative idea."

She added: "It's making car mechanics sexy. I wonder if they will do the same for plumbing courses next."

Roads spokesman for the safety charity Rospa Michael McDonnell said: "There is no reason why people should not take great pride in their vehicles and when they have spent large sums of cash on customising them they take great care of them and tend to drive very responsibly."
