What is a 'Catergory D write-off'?
Answers:
As Craig says they are worth repairing, or buying once repaired.
There are 4 levels of categorisation A,B,C,D. Both A and B are serious and can't legally be put back on the road, C and D can be returned to road use once they have been inspected by an M.O.T. test centre and deemed road worthy, but they will always have a lower value since the D.V.L.A. will have that on their records for the vehicle. When an insurance company assess the damage / cost of repair for a car they calculate it using new parts etc. so for an older car worth £1000 only a small crash can write it off e.g. a door for a Saab 9000 costs £1000 before it's painted, you can buy a 2nd hand door for £50 in the right colour.
basically its knackered not ever roadworthy
A cat D Is a vehicle that the insurance company deem as beyond economical repair. really it isnt any drama at all. If the insurance assesor feels that the cars repair exeeds the value he/she will cat D it. Or if the cost is near or meets the value of the vehicle again Cat D. It could be as simple as a wing, bumper headlamp or stolen recovered, add the cost of labour, paint and materials and your asking for a hefty bill. Ive owned one if they are done properly whats the harm? A higher value car with the same damage would be repaired and given back to the customer no question. Take a Pro to veiw the car if you have any doubts. Maybe an AA man, for example. If the seller has nothing to hide take it to your local garage and get thier advice before you buy it.
These are usually D.I.Y projects, you can find them on the auto trader website.
